A5 vs A4 Flyers: Which Size Is Right for Your Campaign?

When you're ordering flyers in Dublin, one of the first decisions you'll face is size. A5 and A4 are the two most popular formats — and the right choice depends on what your flyer needs to do, where it's going, and how much content you need to fit. Here's how to decide.

What the Sizes Actually Are

A5 is 148 x 210mm — roughly half an A4 sheet. It fits comfortably in a hand, slides into a jacket pocket, and fits neatly into a DL envelope or an A5 display stand.

A4 is 210 x 297mm — standard letter size, the same as a standard printer page. It has roughly twice the print area of an A5.

Both sizes are widely used across Dublin for events, promotions, menus, and business marketing. The question is which one is right for your specific campaign.

When to Choose A5

A5 is the most popular flyer size and for good reason. It's the right choice when:

You're doing a door drop or street handout. A5 fits easily through letterboxes, slots into pockets without folding, and is comfortable to hold and carry. For mass distribution, A5 is significantly cheaper to print in volume than A4 — you get twice as many from the same paper cost.

Your message is simple and direct. If your flyer needs to communicate one offer, one event, or one call to action, A5 gives you plenty of space without tempting you to fill it with unnecessary content. A focused A5 flyer almost always outperforms a cluttered A4.

You're displaying in a leaflet rack or counter stand. A5 fits standard DL and A5 display stands found in cafés, gyms, libraries, and waiting rooms across the city.

You're going into an envelope. A5 slides into an A5 envelope without folding. If you're doing a direct mail campaign, A5 keeps postage and envelope costs low.

When to Choose A4

A4 makes sense when you have more to say or need more visual impact:

You're displaying on a noticeboard or wall. A4 is the standard size for noticeboard flyers. It's visible from a distance and has the area to support a strong design with clear hierarchy. For retail windows and community noticeboards, A4 works better than A5.

Your campaign has a lot of content. Event programmes, service menus, information sheets with multiple offerings — anything that genuinely needs the space benefits from A4. The caveat: if you can edit your content down to fit A5 legibly, you almost always should.

You want a more formal or document-like feel. A4 reads as more authoritative. For professional services, open days, or educational materials, A4 signals seriousness in a way A5 doesn't.

You're using it as a mini-poster. For a small event or promotion, an A4 flyer displayed in a window or on a surface does the job of an A3 poster at a fraction of the cost.

Cost Difference

At Copyprint.ie, A5 flyers cost noticeably less than A4 per unit, especially in larger quantities — because you get two A5s from one A4 sheet. If you're printing 500 or more and budget is a consideration, A5 will stretch your budget significantly further. If you're printing 50 or 100, the difference is smaller.

Both sizes are available in a range of paper weights — 130gsm for standard, 170gsm for premium feel. We print single-sided and double-sided. See our flyer printing service for full pricing.

The Simple Decision Rule

If you're distributing by hand, posting through doors, or displaying in a rack: A5.

If you're displaying on a wall, noticeboard, or window, or if your content genuinely needs the space: A4.

If you're not sure: go A5 and edit your content to fit. A concise, well-designed A5 flyer almost always performs better than an A4 filled with too much information.
